Tansa Dam

Tansa Dam is located in Mumbai in Thane District and serves as an earth fill and gravity dam on Tansa River. The dam has its presence at Mahuli Hills (Atgaon), which is located nearly 85.3 kilometres from Mumbai Airport. The dam is located at a height of 41 metres above the lowest foundation, and is spread over an area measuring 2,804 metres in length.

This dam has a volume content of 2,670 cubic kilometres, while its gross storage capacity is 208,700.00 cubic kilometres. Water supply and drinking water are the two primary reasons behind construction of the dam. It is among the three major drinking water reservoirs out of the total six lakes in the city.

History

Tansa Dam was initially constructed by British Engineer Tullock while serving in the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Considered the oldest masonry dam of the state, it has been developed in stages and played a significant role in the growth of the city.

Construction of the dam started in 1892 and was completed in 1925. The dam was further developed between 2001 and 2004 by engineers of the Municipal Corporation to deal with any tectonic eventuality. This includes the construction of colgrout masonry buttresses downstream. A spillway area was also developed along with colgrout backing.

Tansa Dam covers an area of 320 square km, and is equipped with pipelines that are twin riveted. The dam possesses a full supply level of 128.63 MTR, while its lowest drawable level is 118.87 MTR. It is equipped with nearly 38 spillway gates. This dam is considered one of the finest examples of architecture of that era.

The wildlife sanctuary lies in Thana district. It includes the catchment area of Tansa Lake and has the Tansa Fort and closeby. This wildlife sanctuary comprises neighbouring forests of Shahapur, Khardi, Vaitarna and East Wada hills. Tansa Lake in this area looks truly fascinating. It’s a perennial source of water, which helps the wildlife to survive well.

Climate and Temperature

This area experiences summer season between March and May as the season is hot and temperature remains within 28°C to 37°C. Meanwhile, winters exist from December to February and temperature remains moderate with a maximum of nearly 30°C and a minimum of 19°C. The area also witnesses heavy rainfall during southwest monsoon season from June to September. July is considered as the wettest month accounting for nearly 40% of the annual total rainfall.

The best time to visit Tansa Dam is from September to March as the weather remains pleasant and tourists can possibly enjoy all major sightseeing and attractions.
