The Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has three man made water reservoirs and the Thuvaiar water fall empties into one of the reservoirs. Tourists can go for trekking within the forest with prior permission. Also, boating is done at the reservoir. The tree house in the reserve brings you close to nature like nothing else.

History

The Parambikulam Tiger Reserve was formerly known as the Sungam forest reserve since 1886. It got its present name by the year 1962. Currently, the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is the most protected ecological region of the Western Ghats. It spreads over an area of 285 sq. km. It is one of the 34 biodiversity hotspots in the world. It has an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty and is perhaps the most attractive region of wilderness.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

The region has intense monsoon climate.  The average temperature of the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve lies between 20 to 27 degree Celsius, however the minimum temperature is 15 degree Celsius and the maximum goes up to 32 degree Celsius. The hottest month is March while the coldest month is January, which is also the driest. Rains are caused during south west as well as north east monsoons and July is the wettest month. The total annual rainfall is between 1400 mm to 2300 mm. The best time to visit this reserve is between November and February.

By Air

Coimbatore International Airport in Tamil Nadu is the closest airport which is about 55 km from Palakkad.

By Rail

The Pollachi Junction in Tamil Nadu is around 53 km away and the Palakkad Junction is about 93 km away.

By Road

The Tiger reserve is around 38 km away from Pollachi by road and 84 km from Coimbatore.

Wildlife

Flora

West Coast tropical Evergreen Forest, Moist Deciduous forests and Dry deciduous forests are found here. The Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has a variety of trees including neem, teak, sandalwood and rosewood. The oldest teak tree which is around 450 years old exists here.

Fauna

The Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has a rich and abundant animal life including 39 species of mammals, 16 species of amphibians, 61 species of reptiles and 47 species of fish. Many insects and butterflies are also found here.

Avifauna

286 species of birds inhabit the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. 134 of these are rare species and 18 are endemic. Great Indian hornbill, Black woodpecker, Grey headed fish eagle and great pied hornbill are also found here.

Trekking

Various trails offer adventurous trekking opportunities. Different trekking packages are available for visitors at different prices starting at Rs. 600 for a group of 5.

Jungle Camps

These camps provide opportunities to the visitors to camp in the wilderness. This is an amazing opportunity to stay close to nature and observe plants and animals in their natural environment. Naturalists accompany visitors during the camp to ensure safety and to impart knowledge. You can go for the Bamboo island camp, Thellikkal Night camp or Veettikunnu Island nest.

Administration of Parambikulam Tiger Reserve

The administration of Parambikulam Tiger Reserve has set up an information center for the convenience of visitors. This information center is located in Pollachi, Kerala. The Deputy Director of the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve can also be contacted directly for any information.

Accommodation

A total of 14 centers have been set up to provide accommodation to visitors. They have different bed capacities but all if these are well maintained and hygienic, with provision for all basic amenities. You can contact the tourist information center for booking and other information.

Fees

  • Entry fee for light vehicles is Rs. 50 and that for heavy vehicles in Rs. 150.
  • 3 hour van safari - Rs. 150 per head (only when they are 20 people).
