In Wayanad, Kerala, South India, there is an animal sanctuary known as Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary also called the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. Ecotourism in Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary has two places for ecotourism, Tholpetty and Muthanga. For an unforgettable wildlife experience, you should visit at these two places. Frequent sightings of freely moving deers, guars, herds of elephants, bears, leopards, tiger, many species of butterflies, fishes, reptiles, and birds including vultures etc.

Visitors can also enjoy different types of theme gardens like birth star plants garden, medicinal plants garden and acquire considerable information from interpretation centres. Other attraction of Muthanga includes traditional tribal folk lore, Muthanga Elephant camp with 3 tuskers, etc.

Ecotourism at these two places plays a significant role in forming deep awareness about natural wildlife in the minds of visitors. It is quite recreational and educative too. For tourist guides, it is a major source of livelihood. Muthanga and Tholpetty Eco-development Committees manage the ecotourism of these two places under the supervision of Kerala forest department.

Regulations for Entry

  • Visitors can enjoy this place only during visiting hours.
  • Permission is restricted only to light vehicles.
  • You can make the visit only with a tourist guide or forest personnel.
  • Maximum duration of visiting is 1.30 hours.
  • You cannot use plastic material during your visit.
  • The ecotourism centres are plastic free zones.
  • Maximum number of visitors in a vehicle is according the maximum seating capacity of the vehicle.
  • Visitors who are confirmed have to report 30 minutes before the time slot reserved for them.

Entry time is from 7 to 10 am and 3 to 4:30 pm daily. Best time to visit this place is from August to February. The entry fees for visitors 20 for Indians and 100 for foreigners. If you want to take your camera along with you for non-professional video making you will have to pay Rs. 150 and for vehicle the charges are Rs. 150 and Rs. 50 for heavy and light motor vehicle.
