Cheraman Juma Masjid, the renowned mosque is situated at Methala, which is part of Kodungallur Taluk and is in the purview of state Kerala. This mosque was constructed by Malik Ibn Dinar back in 629 AD and is considered to be the first mosque in India. Some people believe that later in eleventh century, the mosque got rebuilt after an overhaul. There are some attributes that make Cheraman Juma Masjid distinct in appearance, one of which is the blend of Kerala’s traditional art with the Arabian art.

Many pilgrims visit this mosque every year, with Ramzan being the most crowded month. These pilgrims come from various communities. The mosque is probably one of its own as it holds significance in terms of education because many non-Muslim families perform ‘vidyarambham’ for their children here. This term indicates introduction to the literacy world. However, women are prohibited to enter this mosque. As a managing body of the mosque, Mahallu Committee is elected every two years and it consists of adult members who have to follow the bylaws. This mosque also encompasses some historic monuments and there are some in its close vicinity. A temple of Lord Mahadeva is situated just 250 meters from the mosque while another palace belonging to Chera kings too is placed closely.

Besides Thrissur, Ernakulam also is a significant railway station as part of southern railway. Trains connecting prime towns of Kerala and other states can be easily found here.

Nearest Airport

Nedumbassery (Ernakulam) is an international airport and it is just 30 km from Kodungallur.

Architecture
