Valiathura Beach

Located at a distance of 10 Km from the capital city of Kerala, Valiathura beach is an amazingly beautiful beach. Located in close proximity of Shankhumugham, this beach was the only port at one time on the Southern coast of Kerala. The view on the beach during monsoon is astounding when all the fishermen take their catamarans to the Valiathura Pier’s end that is 703 ft long and then their catamarans into the sea. After this, they jump-in themselves and swim to it.

This beach is known as the Fishermen’s beach as you will find plethora of fishermen including men and women selling fishes on this beach. Right from a variety of good fishes to the fishing boats, is what you will find in abundance on this beach. Walking on the shore and watching a sunset give immense pleasure on this beach as the view is spectacular.

How to Reach

By Air

The nearest airport is in Trivandrum and is located at a mere distance of 3 Km from Valiathura beach.

By Rail

Reaching Valiathura by rail is quite easy as the nearest railway station is located at a distance of about 4 Km from the beach. From the railway station one can easily find Auto-rickshaws or Taxis to reach the beach.

By Road

The nearest bus station is in Trivandrum at a distance of about 10 Km which is connected with all the major cities through a well-developed network of roads. Regular buses ply between Trivandrum and the Valiathura beach.

Weather

The monsoons are accompanied with heavy rains, and being a coastal region it does not receives very cold winters. Thus, the best time to visit the pace is between October and March.

Beach Attractions

The beach is popular for its fishermen and one can easily see loads of fishes on the beach. The activities performed by fishermen during monsoon are quite interesting and witnessing them gives immense pleasure. Another attraction of the beach is its sunset which gives spectacularly stunning view to the people enjoying their walk on the beach during evenings.

Valiathura is also famous for its pier which was built around 1960 and is 703 ft tall. It is supported by 127 concrete piles and it has become an imperative spot for fishermen who jump into the sea from here and swim to their catamarans.

Shanghumughan Beach

It is one of the most picturesque and beautiful beaches in Kerala which is quite popular among both, tourists as well as locals. Right on the beach, you can enjoy the South Indian cuisine in a star shaped restaurant. Also, there is a museum near to beach where there is colossal structure of Nymph, that is, Jalkanyaka created by renowned sculptor Sri Kanai Kunjuraman. Also, the Traffic Training Park for children is a huge attraction.

Matasya Kanya

It is a concrete structure of a beautiful mermaid lying in an open shell which is located near the beach area.

Padmanabhaswamy Temple

It is a famous temple devoted to lord Vishnu inside the fort located in the city of Trivandrum. It is one of the 108 divyadesams.
