Alappuzha

Located near a little park and the Alappuzha Lighthouse, this beach is very popular among tourists. The ruined Alappuzha Sea Bridge can be found there as a souvenir of the times when the port of Alappuzha was still infamous. The bridge was used as a passage for ships bringing in goods. Many popular movies, such as Tashan, include scenes shot in this beach. Tourists from all over see Alappuzha as the Venice of the East. If you are lucky you’ll get to catch a glimpse of some of the many rare species of animals and birds that can be found here. Owing to the sea it is located near, this place holds a special position in the state’s marine history. Most of the countries of Europe are fond of this beach.

Weather

Alappuzha is quite pleasant during winters, with temperatures between 20oC and 32oC. Winters stay December through February.  You should preferably visit this place between either August and September or February and March.

Summers are witnessed between the months of March and May. Temperatures range from 22oC to 35oC. The weather is pretty humid at this time.

The area has heavy monsoons that last both between June and September, and October and November. The level of rain mostly reaches 2763mm.

Alappuzha Beach boasts numerous charms for the tourists, just like its neighboring regions. The long beach laden with sparkling sand on which you can relax is perfect if you want some peaceful moments with the sea. Those who crave adventures can quench their thirst by participating in the beguiling activities this place offers.

Along with beach activities such as volleyball, surfing and swimming, the nearby areas tempt tourists with attractions like the unique pier which was built more than a century ago. Long ago, ships destined towards the shore were guided by the ancient lighthouse. For families there are plenty of places to entertain children.

Vijay Park

Situated on the Alappuzha beach, this is a place where you have numerous things to keep you busy. The District Promotion Council runs this area. Children can have a lot of fun here.

Pandavan Rock

A very famous tourist spot, this place got its name from the Pandavas of Mahabharata. They are believed to have sought shelter in this cave in the duration of their exile. It is also referred to as the Rock of the Pandavas, and is a really good spot for picnics.

Bishop’s House

Constructed in the 16th century, this used to be the place where the Portuguese Governor resided. It is situated on a tiny hill close to Parade Ground. It has huge Gothic arches and a garden path in the shape of a circle that winds up towards the entrance. You will find a lot of priceless artifacts in the museum near the house.

Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple

This temple is a symbol of typical architecture of Kerala. It is famed for its Palpayasam, a form of sweet porridge. It is adorned with beautiful paintings of the various incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

Water Sports

One of the best things about Alappuzha is the number of activities you can participate in when at the beach. Sports such as parasailing, surfing and swimming are prevalent here. You are sure to have a wonderful time playing beach volleyball or creating a sand castle.

Boat Races

August and September are known for the boat races that are held during this time. Thousands of people come together on the shore to cheer for the stunning Snake Boat Races.

Shopping

There are plenty of shops here to please the shopaholic in you. They sell everything from carpets to coir matting and are a favorite amongst tourists. The range of stuff available is quite large and the quality and price are unbeatable. The popular commodities available here include sugar, areca nut and coconut oil.

Food Corners

Alappuzha is known for the delicacies its food joints and restaurants offer. If you are a vegetarian, you should check out Hot Kitchen, located on Mullackal Road. The Sree Durga Bhavan Udipi Hotel is also a good choice.

If you want to relish a variety of cuisines, Kream korner on Mullackal road and Vembanad Restaurant located on AS Main road are the perfect places.
