Kunchikal Falls

The falls of Kunchikal are located in the district of Udupi-Shimoga border very close to Masthikatte Hulikal. The falls are also known as Kunchikal Abbe. The waterfall is fed with the waters of River Varahi. The water in the chute flows down through hundreds of rocks that are close to Hulikal, Hosanagara Taluk of district Shimoga. The waterfall is almost 455 meters and hence it is the highest waterfall of the country. The length of the waterfall is as long as 1 km.

The water in this waterfall has significantly reduced after the existence of Mani Dam close to Masthikatte that was used for generating power close to Hulikal in district Shimoga. The water in the water fall is more during the months from July to September that are the months of monsoon.

Best Time to Visit

The most favorable time to visit the waterfall is in the monsoon season in the months from July to September.

How to Reach

By Road

The privately operated buses ply to and fro from the city of Bangalore to Kunchikal falls, though these buses are very less in numbers. The more convenient way to travel this path is via taxi and cabs.

By Rail

The closest rail line to reach the waterfall is the Udupi railway station that is located at 67 km distance. Another accessible railway station is in Shimoga located 97 km from waterfall.

By Air

Mangalore airport is the closest airport to visit the waterfalls that is at a distance of almost 142 kms. Local buses and cabs can be taken to reach the waterfall.
