Tipu Sultan Museum

The historic monument that holds national importance and has a museum in the Dari Daulat Bagh is associated to Tipu Sultan. The museum is located on the palace’s ground floor and majorly exhibits the belongings of Tipu Sultan. The museum also houses the various pencil sketches, oil paintings, coins, Metal artifacts, outfits, furniture, arms etc.
An oil painting done by Sir Robert Ker Porter done in 1800 named as “Seringapatam” is the most historical painting that nicely has captured the Srirangapatna as on 4th of May 1799. The painting features great English officers like General Baird, Sgt. Graham and Colonel Dunlop. The painting displays the army of Tipu Sultan standing on a bridge showing firm confrontation. The background of the painting has the walls of Tipu Sultan’s fort, the turrets of the mosque and gopura of Ranganatha Swami temple.

Tipu Sultan’s portrait is displayed a wearing turban and striped shirt, necklace, girth belt and a cross belt adorned with stones to which the sword is attached. This portrait was done 1792 by G.F. Cherry. There is also another portrait of Tipu Sultan that was done in 1780 by John Zoffany.

The museum also houses a historical painting done by Robert Home that displays sons of Tipu Sultan named Abdul Khaliq and Maizuddin completed during 1792 to 1795. The painting also shows the princes as the hostage along with Ghulam Ali Khan, Tipu Sultan’s Vakil seating on the carrying chair. The background of the picture shows Englishman Captain Kennaway who was the personal secretary of Lord Cornwallis appearing in mode of discussion with Ali Raza Khan while the other Vakil of Tipu Sultan holds an agreement document.

The museum shows a total of 18 sketches made with pencil out of which seven sketches are of Tipu Sultan’s son sultan Fateh Haider, Maizuddin, Yasin Sahib, Shukrullah, Abdul Khaliq, Mohiuddin and Sultan Sahib. There is also a picture of Vakils of Shukrullah named Ghulam Ali Khan and Ali Raza Khan, commander Ghulan Ali Khan, Sheikh Hussain, Badruz Zaman Khan and his companions. There is also a picture of Raja Khan who was the confidential servant and of a senior door keeper named Firuz Saut. There are also sketches of Mir Alam who was the Minister of Nizam along with his son Mir Dauran, Krishna Raja Wodeyar III along with Nandi Raja who is his maternal uncle. All these sketches were done by Thomas Hickey who was an English artist. These sketches were made in the years from 1799 to 1801 in Vellore and Srirangapatna.

Entry Tickets

The operational timings of the museum are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Entrance Fee

The cost of museum entrance is Rs 5 for Indian citizens while all the foreign visitors have to pay a fee of US $ 2 or Rs 100 as museum entrance fee. The entrance to the museum is free for children below age of 15.
