Keladi Museum

Keladi is a temple town in Sagar in the Shimoga district in Karnataka. It is noted for its historical significance. It was ruled by many dynasties, of which the Keladi Nayakas were supreme. The town is witness to many historical and cultural moments.

The Keladi Museum is an effort to encapsulate the wide history of the region for posterity.

History

The founder of Keladi Museum is Keladi Gunda Jois, an individual who strived day and night into preserving the rich history of Keladi. He single-handedly collected the manuscripts, artefacts and information related to different aspects of Keladi’s history and then formed a museum to preserve this vast knowledge.

In recognition to his dedicated work and contribution to preserving the culture of Keladi, Vijayanagar Sri Krishnadevaraya University honoured him with a doctorate.

Jois set up the museum in 1962 as Keladi Museum and Historical Research Bureau. A Trust was formed to look after the daily administration and a group of scholars formed the board of trustees.

In the initial stages, the funding was difficult but slowly grants came in from state and central government. In 2006, the museum was handed over to Kuvempu University in Shimoga.
