Parasgad Fort

Located in Belgaum district of Karnataka, Parasgad Fort is an ideal weekend destination for those who love to explore monuments of historic significance. Now virtually in ruins, the Parasgad fort dates back to 10th century and was built by rulers of Ratta dynasty.

History

Nothing much is known about the historical significance of Parasgad Fort apart from the fact that it was constructed by Ratta dynasty during the 10th century. However, visitors seek blessings of Goddess Renuka Devi when they pay a visit to the fort. This is done by making pillar-like structures from small rocks. These structures made by devotees and visitors who seek blessings from Goddess Renuka Devi are testimony of the fact that they have deep devotion for the Goddess.

Another distinct fact associated with Parasgad fort is the presence of Ramteerth Kund and temples dedicated to Parashurama, Ram, Sita and Nandi within the fort complex.

Architecture

The arch shaped entry gate of Parasgad Fort is a mute testimony to the cultural richness of 10th century during which the fort was designed. A temple in ruins dedicated to Lord Hanuman dons the entrance of the fort. The path from the temple leads through to a rocky valley which takes the visitors to the top of the hillock from where breathtaking views of surrounding yellammanagudda village can be seen.

Not much is left of Parasgad Fort, though the ruins do give a visible impression of the architectural trend which was in prevalence during the Ratta dynasty. The fort has been made after due consideration from security aspect as the same is on a rocky mountain with the edges of the hillock almost perpendicular. This would have made it impossible for any infiltrator to enter the fort complex without being seen.

The fort also has a deep gorge which could have created problems from anyone wanting to attack the fort. Though now in ruins, the fort still attracts large number of visitors on any given day.
