Krishna Raja Sagara Dam

Krishna Raja Sagara Dam is famously known as KRS. This single name is given to both the dam and the reservoir created by this dam. The dam is located in Mandy district, Mysore across Kaveri River. This dam was completed in 1924 and is built on the life giving river of this place, Kaveri River. It not only provides water for irrigation but also supply drinking water to the capital of the state of Karnataka – Bangalore, all the adjoining areas around the dam, including Mysore and Mandya.

The water flowing through this dam is further utilized by the state of Tamil Nadu as it has built Mettur Dam by collecting the same water in the Salem District. During the construction of the dam, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarya was the chief engineer. The majority of the water comes during the monsoon season from August to September. The water is spread across an area of 125 sq. km. the rainy season in this area starts in May or June and continues till November. During a span of nearly eight months, approximately 770 mm of rainfall occurs.

Construction

Krishna Raja Sagar Dam is named after the then present ruler when the dam was built. This dam has certainly brought in new life to the region and is built on river Kaveri. This 8597 feet long dam is gravity feed with size stone masonry. There are 18 gates in total, till date no overflow spillway has been reported as the flood is disposed through gates. Months from June to September are considered as the filling period as it is the rainy season and from October to May is the depletion period.

Attraction

An ornamental garden known as Brindavan garden is attached to KRS dam. Nearly 2 million visitors come to this place every year. This garden was constructed in connection with the dam by Diwan Sir Mirza Ismail. This botanical garden has beautiful fountains and tourist can also take boat ride beneath the dam. KRS Dam is said to have the first automated Crest gates installed. Tourist can stay at four star luxury heritage hotels Royal Orchid or there is an economical option available in the form of guest house.
