Kadra Dam

Kadra Damwhich is one of the popular dams in the state of Karnataka is located in the Karwar town of Uttara Kannada district. Kadra dam was primarily constructed for supply of water to the turbines of hydro electric project. It was constructed across river Kalinadi. The project is completed by KPCL. The Kadra Dam site normally experiences heavy rainfall measuring up to approximately 4600 mm in the monsoon season during the period between June to September. The authorities does not entertain agricultural activity and fishing around the dam areas.

Construction

Kadra Dam was constructed in 1997 in the Tapi and Tadri river basin across the Kalinadi River. It is an earthen dam with a length of 2313 meter and height is 40.5 meter. The dam is the integral part of the Kaiga Project. The architects of the dam have given special emphasis on the safety standards of the dam during floods and failures. The site of the dam itself has been chosen considering the safety aspects. The dam is self sufficient to supply the required water supply to the hydro electric project.

Both the turbine building and reactor buildings are located opposite to one another. The constructions of these sites ensure utmost safety in cases of turbine breakdown.

Picnic Spots

The dam site is a pleasurable place for the nature lovers and tourists. One of the popular attractions from the dam site is the island of Basavaraja Durga. This place is located at a distance of one km.

Durga Devi Temple

The temple believed to be built by Raja Shiv Chhatrapati is located on the Sadashivgad hill. The native Bhandari populations were given the rights of worship by the benevolent king.

Naganath Temple

The temple which is conserved under the ancient monument and archeological site is an excellent place to visit. Anthills are worshipped by the natives in the temple.

Kot Shiveshwar

The fort built by the Bijapur sultanate to protect the area against northern invasion displays the architectural grandeur of those days.

Sadashivgad Fort

Located at a distance of 5 km from the Karwar town, this majestic fort offers panoramic view of the complete town and the Kali River.

Kurumgad Island

It is located at a distance of 4 Km from Karwar town. The island which is in the shape of a tortoise offers excellent view of aquatic animals like dolphins and otters. Kurumagad beach and Narasimha Temple are the other attractions in the island.

Majali Beach

Majali beach is the most popular tourist destination in Karwar. The resorts and cottages here offer excellent holidaying for the tourists. The nearby lake facilitates rowing, fishing and kayaking.

By Air

The nearest city to Kadra dam is Karwar. The nearest airport to Karwar is the Dabolim International Airport located at Goa. It takes two hours to reach Karwar from the airport. The Goa international airport is well connected with several low fare airlines from important cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta, Chandigarh, Pune and Ahmedabad.

By Road

By Train

Karwar Railway station connects major cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Coimbatore and Pune. There are several important trains plying through this station.
