Gulmarg is a beautiful hill station that is situated 56 km from Srinagar. One of the most preferred destinations among visitors to J&K, Gulmarg is a combination of two words i.e. Gul and Marg, where the word ‘Gul’ means flower, ‘Marg’ means paddock. Therefore, the name Gulmarg stands for ‘a grazing land of flowers’.

About Gulmarg

Gulmarg is one of India’s best skiing destinations that always have something to present to everyone. Gulmarg is truly a journey to a land that will take you back to a world filled with beautiful flowers and serene quiet. Gulmarg is placed in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir at a height of 2730 meters above sea level. It has a wide expanse of snow-capped peaks, all of them adjoining the magnificence of this land. Some of the flower breeds that blossom in Gulmarg are forget-me-nots, bluebells, buttercups, and daisies. The very popular tourist attractions of Gulmarg are its well-manicured golf courses and an interesting Gondola lift.

The good-looking and panoramic golf course here has 18-holes. It is positioned at an altitude of 2,650 meters above sea level. This golf course is not only for players. It is also a hotspot for tourists who go there to appreciate the eye-catching abundant green land slopes that dispose steadily. There is a recently constructed Gondola lift that offers an elevated traverse over the mountains and views of pine-clad slants. It’s one of the best places to get a stunning bird’s eye view of Gulmarg. A little beneath Gulmarg, there is a sacred place of worship of Baba Reshi, who was a Muslim Saint.

Gulmarg is not only famous for its flowers and scenic beauty. The place is also popular for its sports like Skiing, Trekking and Heliskiing. In winters, the eye-catching Gulmarg becomes a skiing resort and it attracts visitors from all parts of the world. Khilanmarg is an important skiing center and a must visit for enthusiasts. The skiing period begins in December and goes on till the month of April. Heliskiing is a sport where a helicopter takes a person to the chosen peak from where one can take a personal dive route.

The point from where one can sight Alpather Lake and view the melting snow is popular. You can see melting ice from Apharwat Mountains to Ningli Nallah. This is one of the major sightseeing attractions for visitors in Gulmarg.


In the early years, Gulmarg was said to be a resort for Kings who used to visit here frequently. Yousuf Shah Chak and Jahangir were some of them who visited this resort. Earlier Gulmarg was named as Gaurimarg. The name was based on the name of Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. Yousuf Shah Chak changed the name of this place to Gulmarg.

In the early years of 20th century, the central Asian Explorer Sir Marc Aurel Stein made his home in Gulmarg.


Alpather Lake

Alpather Lake is a calm and beautiful tourist place that attracts people for its scenic beauty. It is located on a valley downhill the clone Apharwat peaks at a height of approx. 4,511 m. It is triangular lake and is positioned in the background of beautiful mountainous snow capped territories. The lakeside precincts add attractiveness to its surroundings. This beautiful lake remains ice-covered till June. Throughout the summer, the lake sees streams of sparkling water flow from beginning to end with ice pieces floating in it.

Baba Reshi Shrine

Gulmarg is also home to a shrine of Baba Reshi, who was the saint of Muslims here. The shrine was built in 1480. This shrine is 5 centuries old and it was constructed with the architectural styles of Persian and Mughals.

St Mary's Church

A dutifully significant church in Gulmarg, St Mary's Church is a gravestone of British Rule in India. The church was constructed 150 years back by well-known British architects. Therefore, the design and style in which it is constructed is reminiscent of British churches. This holy church is an uncommon Christian church in Gulmarg and it is accessible all the way through trekking

Gondola Ride

A Cable Car ride in Gulmarg is one of its most breathtaking attractions. Also recognized as Gondola Lift, it is 1 km away from Gulmarg’s bus stand. The ride is separated into two segments - one is from Gulmarg to Kongdori and the other is from Kongdori to Apharwat. The Gondola overtakes pine forests with an elevation of 2690 m above sea level and rises up to 3090 m up to Kongdoor.


The two main sports activities that can be carried out in Gulmarg are Skiing and snowboarding. Gulmarg has turned into the most admired spot for skiing in India. The slopes here are natural. This makes them the finest and most appropriate place for beginners. This is because amateurs prefer the mild slopes of ski runs here. Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering situated in Gulmarg also offers 10 day & 21 day short ski courses for newcomers as well as pros. 

Best Time to Visit Gulmarg

While Gulmarg can be visit all round the year, the perfect time to make a trip here is from March to October when the weather is moderate.

Summers last from March to May when the temperatures hovers between 13°C and 29°C. Weather is clear here so one can enjoy scenic beauty and the flowers, while snow can also be seen at higher altitudes. This is also the time to engage in adventure sports.

Winter lasts from November to February when temperature dips to sub zero levels. The place experiences heavy snowfall and this is the time to engage in skiing and snowboarding here. This is also the time when honeymooning couples make a trip.

July to August is monsoon months and a good time to visit Gulmarg. The place receives moderate rainfall during these months.

By Air

The nearest airport to Gulmarg is Sheikh-Ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar. The distance from Srinagar airport to Gulmarg is 56 km. There are quite a lot of airlines that function nonstop flights to and from Srinagar. They connect the area to most major cities of India.

By Rail

The adjacent railway station to Gulmarg is Jammu Railway Station. Trains from all the major cities and states of India reach Jammu from where a person can catch a taxi to arrive at Gulmarg.

By Road

Gulmarg has an immense road network for a hilly region. Only 52 km away from Srinagar, Gulmarg is connected to Jammu and bordering cities and states by a well urban set-up of roads.
