Surrounded by tall and beautiful Chinar trees, the settlement of Bijbehara is also called ‘Town of Chinars’. It is said that this town became home to several Chinar trees during Mughal rule when Emperors imported trees from Iran to enhance its beauty.

Known not only for grandeur and scenic beauty, this town also houses sprawling lush green gardens. One such garden is Darashikoh Bagh, which is located on the national highway in Bijbehara, Anantnag. The village lies at a distance of about 45 kilometers from Srinagar. Jammu and Kashmir is known for scenic beauty, history and monuments. It is one of the most popular and unmatched tourist destinations, preferred by visitors in India and abroad. Gifted with unparallel beauty, Bijbehara village lies in Anantnag, which is gateway to the beautiful Kashmir Valley.

Also known as the Wazir Bagh, the banks of Jhelum near this garden are steep. Well laid and beautiful, this garden is a splendid instance of exotic Mughal style architecture.

About the Place

Situated on banks of River Jhelum, Darashikoh Bagh was built in the 1640 AD by Dara Shikoh, who was the eldest son of emperor Shah ]ahan. Stretched over an area of 17.15 hectares, this garden used to serve as a camping ground for the Mughals on their journeys.

Darashikoh Bagh is connected with Padshahi Garden over a bridge under Jhelum River. Beautiful and splendid, Darashikoh Bagh houses huge Chinar trees, green turf and striking flower beds, which offers a magnificent view. Set amidst nature, this garden also holds several fruit trees and central water canal. This picturesque garden bears resemblance to Shalimar Garden of Srinagar. It makes a great place for both the tourists as well as locals.  

Darashikoh Bagh is currently being maintained by Dr Haseeb Drabu Ex. CMD J&K Bank Limited from the Floriculture Department.

Summer is the best time to visit this place as parks and gardens sprawl with beauty, colors and greenery.

How to Reach


By Road

One can get to Anantnag by road to reach Darashikoh Bagh or Bijbehara, which is situated at a distance of around 45 kilometers from Srinagar.

By Air

The closest airport is located at Srinagar, which is around 5 km away from Anantnag. Srinagar airport is well connected with frequent flights from cities such as Mumbai, Jammu and New Delhi. Tourists can also hire taxis or take buses from the airport to the city.

By Rail
