The University Museum of Himalayan Archaeology and Ethnography is located in a university, H.N.B. Garhwal University (Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University). The Museum is situated inside the University campus. H.N.B. Garhwal University is a government authorized University which is situated in Srinagar town of district Pauri Garhwal of State of Uttarakhand in India. The University got its name from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna.

This Museum was set up year 1981 by ‘Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology’ of the University. As the name implies, the University started this Museum with the purpose of preserving valuable information regarding the ‘Himalayan Archaeology and Ethnography’. This Museum is famous for its wide ranging collection of antiquities that belong to various different ages and are very precious. But the major centre of attraction for this Museum is its wide ethnographical collection due to which the Museum is accredited at global level.

Museum of University

The University Museum of Himalayan Archaeology and Ethnography is basically a Museum that has been started and built inside the campus of a famous University of Srinagar town of district Pauri Garhwal of Uttarakhand state of India. The University started in 1973 but the Museum got into existence in 1981 due to an initiation of University to pay special attention towards conservation and preservation of valuable information associated to ‘Himalayan Archaeology and Ethnography’. The Museum is well known for its extensive range of collection of antiquities that belong to various different ages and are very valuable. The major core of attraction for tourists in this Museum is its wide ethnographical collection due to which the Museum is accredited at international level. The sculptures of Garhwal Himalayas in Museum portray an in-depth light on the Himalayan past.

The Museum is inside the campus of H.N.B. Garhwal University. This University was started in 1973 and has a wide campus and various research departments of its own. The University has beautiful natural outlook that makes it a worth watch.

The Museum is majorly and worldwide accredited for its collection of antiquities that belong to various different ages and are very valuable. The antiquities have been discovered over the years in the mid central areas of wide Himalayan region and are extensively precious.

The Museum of Himalayan Archaeological and Ethnography incorporates various remarkable things on display for the tourists. The Museum is famous for putting into display the excavated as well as explored archaeological material and artifacts along with pottery, terracotta’s implements, antiquities and sculptures.

The Museum consists of collection of archival anthology which includes periodicals, manuscripts, paintings, literature, and newspapers along with some of the local records. But the major attraction remains the extensive ethnographic material. This Museum has got an extensive range of photographic and graphic section along with big variety of slides and photographs along with some drawings of sculptures and temples. The Museum also has explored and exhumed sites of mid central zone of Himalayan range. Along with these, the Museum also in-house the reassert works of famous Archaeologists.

How to Reach

By Road/Bus

Buses are the major source of transportation for reaching Pauri Garhwal. Buses from major cities reach Pauri Garhwal bus station terminal. Taxis are second source of transportation in Pauri Garhwal. Private taxis and cabs are available to reach any destination.

By Plane/Air

This Museum is in Uttarakhand and Uttarakhand has three airports in it. So, if you are planning to visit this Museum by air transportation, you can choose any of these 3 airports - Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun, airport of Pithoragarh’s Naini Saini and Pantnagar airport. Jolly is closest one but at a distance of 155 km. From these airports, bus and cab facility is easily available.

By Train/Rail

Rail is another good option for tourists. The nearest railways station is Kotdwar which is easily connected with numerous major cities of India. But this railway station is almost 101 km away from Pauri Garhwal. From there tourists can take private cabs or taxi which are easily available.

Visitor Information

Since the Museum is under the supervision of the H.N.B. Garhwal University and is a part of it, the Museum is open for 6 days of the week (in compliance with university timings). The timings to visit Museum are from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. The Museum is closed on Sunday and also on the national holidays when university is also closed.
