Kanchenjunga Museum

The Kanchenjunga Museum is located in Gulmarg. This Museum is under the premises of the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) which is a training school of the Indian Army. It includes the equipments of climbing and mountaineering which are related to war and are used by the Indian Army from 1947 till date. Accessible easily by buses, cabs and taxis, it is a nice museum which will draw the attention of young breeds of generation who are interested to see the equipments used by Indian Army in high altitude warfare.

Museum of Warfare School

This Museum was established in 1978. This museum was set up to commemorate the first summit of Indian Army to Kanchenjunga which was held in 1997. Thereafter, other expeditions like first successful Everest expedition of 2001 have been given an appropriate accreditation here. This Museum contains all the old and present war equipments used by the Indian Army. There are also some gears along with the war equipments in the Museum which are worth watching.

High-Altitude Warfare School

The High Altitude Warfare School is a research institute and it also provides training to the Indian Army. This school was established in 1978. It provides training for mountain warfare in high altitude along with training to develop ideas and tactics to fight in adverse situations and difficult regions. It is famous all over the world as mountain warfare school which gives training to the Indian Army.

This warfare school was initially started in 1948 as a Ski School for 19 Infantry Division. Throughout the years, this Warfare School become the Army's nodal entity for giving specialized training and also expansion of doctrines in high-elevation, snow warfare and mountains.

On Display

The display in the Kanchenjunga Museum of the High Altitude Warfare School contains all the old and present war and mountaineering equipments and gears operated by the Indian Army. Inside the museum, there are two sand models which are related to the Kanchenjunga Museum of 1977 and 2001 Everest expedition.

The Ningli Nallah

This stream is nearby the museum and is worth a watch. The origin of this stream is Apharwat peak from which ice melts and the stream continues down into the valley below and joins the Jhelum River. This long, grassy valley is a popular picnic spot.

Outer Circle Walk

Outer Circle Walk, which is an 11 km long trek around the Valley of Kashmir, is a must see tourist place near Kanchenjunga Museum Gulmarg. The participants are taken through the outer circle surrounding the valley which crosses rows of pine trees, beautiful landscapes and lush green grasslands.

The view of the world's fourth highest peak, the Nanga Parbat which is at an elevation of 8500 meters, is a chief attraction of the walk. The beauty of the Sunset Peak and Haramukh which are the two popular tourist spots can also be viewed by the trekkers during the walk.

How to Reach

By Road

Gulmarg is well connected to all the major cities and towns by the state bus service of Jammu and Kashmir. Private cabs and taxis can also be hired to reach Gulmarg.

By Air

The nearest airport to Gulmarg is the Srinagar airport. This airport is well connected to all the major cities. Cabs or taxis are also available outside the airport to reach the destination.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is the Jammu railway station and it is well connected to all the major cities. Outside the station there are buses and taxis available to reach Gulmarg.

Visitor Information

During summers, Kanchenjunga Museum is open on all days from 9 o’clock in the morning to 5 o’clock in the evening. During winters, it is open from 10 o’clock in the morning to 4 o’clock in the evening. It will take only 3 to 4 hours to explore this warfare school and Kanchenjunga Museum. So, you will get spare time to visit the other nearby places also.
