Dera Baba Banda is a 300 year old historic monastery, which is built on the banks of Chenab River in Jammu. This splendid monastery is located at a distance of 75 km from Jammu city. Within the premise of this monastery is located a shrine that belongs to Baba Banda Bahadur.

Every year, people come to this holy shrine from different parts of India to pay their tribute to the great soul. Sikhs worship this shrine all year around.  Dera Baba Banda is regarded as a favored Jathedar of Shri Guru Gobind Singh. Baba Banda’s association with Sikh Guru Gobind Singh got him recognition all over the world.

Every year, tourists throng the famous monastery of Baba Banda to explore relics of Guru Gobind Singh. It is said that the Sikh guru handed over his relics, which include a bow and arrow, a sword and some other important weapons, to Baba Banda. The shrine also houses ashes of Baba Banda, which draws tourists from different parts of India to pay tribute to the holy saint.

This monastery is regarded as an important tourist and pilgrimage destination in Northern India. Sikh devotees come here every year to celebrate Vaisakh festival and also to explore the beauty of the breathtaking Chenab River.

History

An important Hindu-Sikh pilgrimage, center of Dera Baba Banda has a very interesting historical background attached to it. Banda Singh Bahadur was a military commander who bravely struggled against Mughal Empire. After his meeting with Shri Guru Gobind Singh in 18th century he was given the name Baba Banda. The people of this region look up to Baba Banda as a great martyr of Sikh army.

Therefore, to pay tribute and also to commemorate the martyr soldier for ages to come, this monastery was built. The motive of memorializing sacrifices of this soldier to keep them fresh in the memory of has been accomplished. Therefore, people from all over the world recognize the martyr Baba Banda and sings praises about his glorious achievements.

Guru Gobind Singh called him as his favorite “saint-soldier”. Pilgrims every year from different parts of India come here during the month of April to celebrate a three day Mela held on Vaisakh. This festival is celebrated with great pomp and show. The entire monastery is dressed like a bride dipped in lighting and color.

Architecture

The majestic monastery built in white marble symbolizes peace and compassion through the architecture of the exterior walls. Apart from the natural hills and the beauty of the landscape the architectural excellence of the monastery attracts large number of tourists each year.The golden hues of the interior walls of the monastery add both richness and royalty to the place.

Natural beauty blended with man-made excellence in the architecture of this monastery makes it a preferred spot for tourists. Carvings on this wall are minute and exhibit a grandeur and splendor par excellence. The 48 feet high Nishan Sahib made of deodar and artistic frescoes are other examples that stand as an exemplary of the architecture of this monastery.
