Trek From Sonamarg To The Valley

Trek from Sonamarg to the Valley via Gangabal Lake is one of the most favorite trekking tour opted by adventure lovers when visiting Jammu & Kashmir. This trek is not an easy one like majority of trek tours in Jammu & Kashmir and thus attracts those who love facing thrill closely. This trek tour is widely accredited by tourists around the world during the season there.

The trek starts from the Sonamarg, a beautiful hill station in J&K and then move towards the valley via the route of famous Gangabal Lake. In between the trek, the tourists also passes by, while enjoying, the route of Thajiwas Glacier, Nichnai, Vishnasar, Krishansar Lake and then Gadsar and Gangabal Lake. From Gangabal lake, trekkers then reaches the Valley and finishes their adventurous trek filled with rejoice and unforgettable memoires while making a return from the tour.

An important point should be considered before opting for this trekking tour. Since this is a hardcore full week trekking, trekkers should first get their routine medical check-up before opting for this trek adventurous tour. It could get problematic for a person having BP problem, diabetic, asthma or any other health issue. Moreover some initial training for staying in a tent and living on your own in some hard conditions along with basic initiative health related knowledge should be there with the trekker.

Trekking In Gulmarg

Trek from Sonamarg to the Valley via Gangabal Lake is quite a long tour of almost 7 days. The journey starts from Sonamarg and ends to the Valley while having several places as breaking points. The entire trek, day by day, is described as below -

Day 1 – From Sonamarg to Thajiwas Glacier

The tour starts from Sonamarg and till mid day they can enjoy the serenity of the Sonamarg. After that the trekkers move ahead to their first destination, Thajiwas Glacier. This glacier is at a distance of almost 3km, on foot and trekkers spend the day enjoying the surroundings while spending night at the local camps which are located at the foothills of this glacier.

Day 2 – From Thajiwas Glacier to Nichnai

Day two starts with trekkers leaving for their next destination which is Nichnai that is at a distance of 13 km from glacier. Trekkers cross Shokhadari in between before reaching Nichnai. The night is spent in the tents while enjoying the closeness to the lap of Mother Nature.

Day 3 – From Nichnai to Vishnasar to Krishansar Lake

This trekking, on third day, is of average distance 15 km overall. From Nichnai, trekkers move towards Vishnasar first and then move ahead to their new destination which is Krishansar Lake. The night is again spent at tents.

Day 4 – From Krishansar to Gadsar

On day 4th, an average of 16 km is on the route for the trekkers. The trekkers begin their journey in the morning from Krishansar to move towards the Gadsar, their next destination. The journey from Krishansar to Gadsar is of almost 6 to 7 hours and in the evening the trekkers reach Gadsar while night is again spent in tents.

Day 5 – From Gadsar to Gangabal Lake

From Gadsar, trekkers start their journey to reach Poshpatri. From here again they start to arrive at Megandub and after reaching Megandub they move ahead towards Zangibal peak. From this peak the journey continues to the infamous Gangabal Lake while stay is in tents at night.

Day 6 – From Gangabal Lake to Valley

After enjoying the lake till mid day, from Gangabal lake trekkers then proceed ahead towards their next destination which is the Valley where their journey will be at an end.

Day 7 – Valley

This entire day is to enjoy the valley and its nearby areas that includes Buddhist monastery along with natural beautiful views and in the evening, one can take back the way to their return and hence the trekking finishes here.

Essentials to be Carried Along

Sleeping bags, Sun blocks, heavy woolens, tent material, good moisturizer, gloves, balms, rain gear, monkey cap, personal essential products, water proof shoes, some sour & sweet eatable, dry fruits, walking stick , torch along with a personal First Aid kit.

Climate

In winters the climate here goes down zero degree so it can become difficult to trek around in winters. The best time is of spring n summers since climate is cozy and lakes and glaciers are not frozen at that time and one can enjoy trekking completely.

This trekking should be avoided during rainy season since the area gets totally muddy around which is not favorable for the trekking purpose. Moreover during the rainy season, the atmosphere becomes quite sticky which is not good for hardcore full week trekking.
