Notable Personalities In Himachal Pradesh

The beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh is home to quite a few famous personalities of the country. Many notable personalities belonging to the state that is hailed as the ‘Land of Gods’ or ‘Dev Bhoomi’, have made it big in various fields. While some were born and brought up in the state and belong to it permanently, there were many who were educated here.  Among these, some have made a name in the field of politics and literature, while some have stood out in the field of cinema and sports, among other fields. Here is a short introduction of some of these personalities:

Popularity is not the parameter of this list, nor is it viewed in their current context. Their renown may or may not have been long lived; this list takes into account the fact that they were famous when they hit the highest point of their popularity.

Preity Zinta- The Dimple Girl from Shimla

Among the most celebrated stars of Indian cinema, dimpled beauty Preity Zinta hails from the popular hill station of Shimla. Her wide repertoire and hard work in the field of Indian cinema is a matter of great pride for all Himachalis. Belonging to a Hindu Rajput family, Zinta was born in Rohru- a tehsil part of the district of Shimla. She is an alumnus of the Convent of Jesus and Mary- one of the most celebrated all-girls’ schools of the country. She passed her matriculation exams from the Convent of Jesus and Mary, and got herself enrolled in St. Bedes, Shimla- another of the most famous all-girls’ colleges of Shimla for further education. Zinta graduated in English honours from the very same college.

Anupam Kher- A Virtuoso Actor from Shimla

Part of the elite league of Indian cinema, Anupam Kher’s remarkable acting abilities have been praised by one and all. People of the state consider it an honour that the distinguished actor belongs to Himachal Pradesh- the ‘Dev Bhoomi’. He was born on the 7th of March, 1955 to a middle class family in the state. Kher received his education from DAV school located in Lakkar Bazaar in Shimla- another famous school of the town. He took a deep interest in acting right from his school days, when he would take part in plays and performances in different functions that took place in school.

Dilip Singh Rana- A Himachali Wrestler

Dilip Singh Rana- this name may not ring a bell instantly, but his stage name definitely will. ‘The Great Khali’- this name definitely sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Dilip Singh Rana is the original name of this world famous wrestler, known for his indomitable frame and unique fighting moves. The 7 feet 3 inches tall wrestler hails from the humble state of Himachal Pradesh.

Ruskin Bond- A Rhetoric Author

Ruskin Bond- the name itself is self-introductory. One of the most defining writers of the present era, his pen has written some marvelous gems when it comes to literature. Ruskin Bond was born in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh- Kasauli region, to be specific. He received his education from the Bishop Cotton School- one of the oldest and most well-known boarding schools in all of Asia. For his excellent work in the field of English literature, several prestigious awards have been bestowed upon the eminent writer, including the Padma Shree and the Sahitya Akademi Award. His short stories and novels well encapsulate his long standing love for the state that is his home. He often writes ghosts stories that are centered in and around Himachal Pradesh.

Captain Vikram Batra- Param Vir Chakra recipent

A war hero, Captain Vikram Batra was enlisted with the Indian Army and rose to the ranks of an Army Officer.  He was posthumously honoured with the Param Vir Chakra- the country’s highest honour for bravery for his gallant and fearless efforts in the Kargil War, which was fought between India and Pakistan in the year 1999. He was born to Jai Kamal Batra and GL Batra in the Palampur region- in a village called Ghuggar. He enrolled in the Indian Military Academy in 1996 in Dehradun, in Manekshaw Battalion’s Jessore Company. He became a part of the Indian Army as Lieutenant of 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in Sopore, J&K; and became Captain eventually.

Mohit Chauhan- Attractive Singer

Mohit Chauhan has worked hard to be recognised as one of the leading voices when it comes to playback singing in today’s day and age. He hails from Nahan- a town that falls under Sirmaur district. He first achieved fame as a pop singer, and slowly rose to fame as a playback singer famous for adding soul to love songs. He has won the Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer (Male) twice, apart from several other awards.

Kangna Ranaut- Charming and fascinating

Kangna Ranaut is among the rising stars of the Indian film industry, who first rose to fame with the film ‘Gangster’.  She hails from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, in the town of Bhambla. Ranaut’s acting abilities and hard work have fetched her a National Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, apart from a Filmfare Award.

Sanjay Kumar- Brave Soldier of India

Sanjay Kumar, a Rifle-man part of the 13th Battalion of J&K Rifles, faced rival camps under sub-zero circumstances and redefined courage. He bore the tearing pain of wounds caused by gunshots while attempting to recapture the Muskoh valley, which stands over 17, 000 ft above ground. He led a contingent of army jawans. He hails from the village of Bakain, which falls in the district of Bilaspur.
