Climatic Conditions in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is well known for its diverse climatic conditions because of its varying altitude. The height of regions in Himachal Pradesh roughly ranges between 450 to 6500 metres. The climate varies widely right from hot and sub-humid tropical in southern low tracts which is located at a height of 450 to 900 metres above the sea level; climate will be warm and temperate at an altitude of 900 to 1800 metres above the sea level. There will be cool and temperate climatic conditions at an elevation of 1900 to 2400 metres above the sea level. Whereas, the climate will be cold glacial and alpine at an altitude of 2400 to 4800 metres above the sea level, in the northern and eastern highly elevated mountain ranges.

By month of October, both morning and night gets very cold. There is heavy snowfall at an altitude of 3000 m which is of 3 mm and it starts during last week of December and extends till the end of March. At a height of 4500 m there is an everlasting snowy atmosphere.

Rainy season gets initiated during the end of June. The topography gets flourished with greenery that looks very fresh. During monsoon season, the tributaries and other natural springs are rejuvenated. The heavy rainfall during the month of July and August causes lot of erosion, floods and landslides resulting in a heavy loss of life and property. Among all the districts of the Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala receives highest rainfall, nearly about 3400 mm. Contrastingly, Spiti is the driest area of this state which records an average rainfall of less than 50 mm. The reason behind this is that, this region is situated at such a place that it is bounded by high mountains on all the sides.

Himachal Pradesh situated at the foothills of Himalayan Mountain, is a very famous hill station, worth watching during a trip to India. Located at an altitude of 6,500 m above the sea level, the climatic conditions in Himachal Pradesh are pleasant and enjoyable. Presence of hill stations, its geographical diversity and the backdrop of the great Himalayas makes the climate in Himachal Pradesh vary from hot and humid in the valleys to extremely cold situation in the higher altitude regions. Summer may prevail during the months of March to June while winter may start from the month of October and extends till February.

Snow is unavoidable in alpine zone which is situated at an altitude of 2,500 m above the sea level. The ideal period for snow lovers to visit Himachal Pradesh would be from the month of November to month of February. The climate in Himachal Pradesh is also perfect for many adventurous sports including skiing and trekking. Lahaul, Spiti and Kinnaur region in the trans-Himalayan area faces cold and dry nights without any rainfall. Presence of abundant flowers in the Kinnaur valley is definitely a treat to the viewer’s eyes. Honeymooners get mesmerized by the tranquility and charmness that prevails in this region during winter season.

Summer in Himachal Pradesh

There are breathtaking panoramic views in these Himachal valleys and towns during the summer season. The Shivalik and mid-hill zone will be delivered with mild summer together with spells of rainfall. The temperature during summer season in Himachal Pradesh may vary from 28 degree C to 32 degree C.

Monsoon in Himachal Pradesh

There is a major influence of rainfall in the climatic conditions of Himachal Pradesh specifically in lower ranges. During rainy season, Dharamshala receives the highest amount of rainfall from July to September.

Monsoon months from July to September will give a re-birth to Himachal Pradesh. This is the period when the topography of this state is engulfed with lush greenery. There may be repetitive landslides which ultimately lead to loss of life and property but for those who wish to take risk in life, this is the best and ideal situation to engage themselves in some of the rafting and other water sports. Dalhousie which is situated at an altitude of 3400 m is the highest receiver of rainfall in Himachal Pradesh.

People generally avoid visiting this place during monsoon season because of the unexpected rain bashing and landslides. Therefore there won’t be any crowd in flights and trains. However it is always wise to check for the local climatic condition before planning for touring in Himachal Pradesh. As this season will be considered as an off –season, the prices of hotels come down up to 50 percent and many hotels display off-season discounts.

Ideal Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh

Although Himachal Pradesh is a best place to tour all round the year, there are certain specific actions that can be enjoyed only during a particular season. For people who wish to escape from the hands of hot and scorching sun, Himachal Pradesh is the best place to visit during the months of April to October. For ones, who love to enjoy the snow and various winter sports, should definitely plan their visit during the months of November to February. Though all water sports can be enjoyed throughout the year, one should avoid their visit during the months of July to September when dashing rain leads to several landslides. Thus, irrespective of the month, Himachal Pradesh possesses plenty of reasons to attract tourists. Everyone should enjoy Himachal Pradesh tour at least once in their life time to admire the best of nature.
