How To Reach Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is the northern state of India which is situated on the terrain region below the Great Himalayan mountain ranges. How to Reach Shimla and Manali


Shimla and Manali

Shimla and Manali are the two paradises on earth which are basically hill stations and regions with picturesque locations and landscapes. The main gateway to visit these hill stations are Chandigarh, Kalka and from the national capital Delhi. All the three modes of transportation can be accessed from these important destinations to reach Shimla. However, there are no train facilities to reach Manali, one has to either travel by air or road.

Visiting Shimla from Delhi/Chandigarh

One can reach Shimla from Delhi by using the Kalka and Shimla toy train or a luxury bus service which operates on a regular basis. Shimla is located at a distance of 306 Km from Delhi by road. The most accessible bus terminal for Shimla from Delhi is the ISBT Kashimiri Gate. Apart from state transport buses, there are numerous tour operators who provide comfortable journey in luxury and Volvo buses. Night bus services are also available. When you are travelling from Chandigarh to Shimla, bus services is from ISBT bus station located at Sector 43.

The tourists can also take the trip to Shimla by train. Train facility is available from both Delhi and Chandigarh. The tourists will have to take a broad gauge train from both these places to Kalka to board the toy train to Shimla. The journey by toy train gives full enthusiasm and helps the tourist to enjoy his journey by becoming part of nature’s beauty. The distance between Chandigarh and Kalka is 25 km, regular bus and taxi facility are available from Chandigarh to Kalka.

The most convenient way to reach Shimla from Delhi if you want to cut short your travelling period and utilize the same in local sightseeing is to opt for air travel. Low fare airlines like Kingfisher Airlines operate from Delhi to Shimla. However, no flight facility is available between Chandigarh to Shimla.

Visiting Manali from Delhi and Chandigarh

The Hill town of Manali can be reached using flight or road facility. Regular bus services run by state transport departments and local tour operators are available to reach the hilly destination. The bus service is available from Kashmiri gate ISBT for travelers from Delhi. These buses are operated by Delhi transport department, other available option is to travel using a Volvo or luxury bus operated by tour operators.

It is also easy to undertake air travel from Delhi to Manali. Regular flight services are provided by Kingfisher airlines. The flight lands at Kullu airport and Manali is located at a distance of 40 Km from Kullu. Tourists can take taxis and bus services to reach Manali from Kullu.

Touring Dharamshala and Dalhousie

Dalhousie and Dharamshala are the gateway for travelers to reach Himachal Pradesh. The distance between both these destinations is 155 km if we follow the route via Nurpur.

Reaching Dharamshala and Dalhousie from Delhi or Pathankot or Chandigarh

The main railway link connecting both the destination is Pathankot railways station located at a distance of 255 Km from Dharamshala and 100 Km from Dalhousie. There are excellent highways connecting both these destinations by road and railway links from Chandigarh and Delhi. Numerous bus services are available from all three destinations to reach Dalhousie and Dharamshala. Both these places are the center of tourist attraction. Moreover, private bus services are also run by tourist operators.

The nearest air link to both these places is Gaggal airport which is situated 14 Km from Dharamshala and 103 Km from Dalhousie.

How to Reach Himachal Pradesh


By Flight

The state of Himachal Pradesh has three important domestic airports located at Gaggal, Bhuntar and Jubbar Hati. Numerous flights operate between these three domestic airports and Delhi/Chandigarh. The nearest airport to the capital city of Shimla is Jubbar Hati airport which is situated at a distance of 23 km. This airport is well connected with important destinations like Chandigarh, Kullu and Delhi.

By Train

The presence of variations in elevation, hills and terrain does not make it easy to establish railway tracks. Railway lines are very less in the state. There are a few broad gauge and narrow gauge links in plain areas of the state. The longest railway line which passes through the state is Pathankot - Jogindernagar line which comes all the way from Punjab. The tourists can enjoy scenic beauty and picturesque landscape by travelling in the toy train from Kalka to Shimla. Kalka is well connected with other cities on broad gauge link. The two other important railway stations in the state are the Una and Solan.

By Road

The diversified landscapes in the state makes journey by road the most dangerous during the winter and monsoon season. Roads are prone to landslide during monsoon season. However, if you are an adventure lover then these roads would provide you best of scenic views and breath taking hair pin bends and slopes. Most of the prominent cities of Himachal Pradesh are well connected with roads from other states. The roads passing through higher altitudes are shut during winter season owing to extreme snow fall and landslide. Regular bus services by state government and private tour operators are available from cities like Mandi, Chail, Kullu, Chandigarh, Delhi, Dehradun, Manali, Amble, Pathankot and Shimla. Tourists can also hire taxis from all these places for local sightseeing and travel to nearby states.
