Rewalsar Lake

Rewalsar Lake is a beautiful lake located in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. It is a rectangular shaped lake that is bordered by mountains and different plantations. This place attracts many pilgrims all over the world as it has many temples.The surrounding cities of Rewalsar Lake include Nangal, Arki and Kullt. At Rewalsar, there is also a statue of Padmasambhava which is 123 ft. high.

It is the perfect place for one to relax away from busy city life. One can enjoy the beauty of the lake from a height by climbing up the hills. Plantations surrounding this lake also add to freshness to the air.

This lake also has an intriguing religious history. It is said that saint Padmasambhava left Rewalsar in the 8th century AD and took sermons to Tibet in an attempt to spread Buddhism. Later, in the 17th century, different religions of India came to Rewalsar to fight against the ethnic cleansing that was being undertaken by Mughals.

Such a history has made Rewalsar a land of many history and religious spots. At a scenic end of this lake is an ochre-red Debung Kagyud Gompa with a large statue. It works as a Tibetan cloth painting school.

Around the same place is a gurdwara where Sikh leader Guru Gobind Singh is revered. This is a pale blue Gurudwara, which was created in 1930s. There are many other gompas around this lake, which are beautifully designed with murals. Hindu temples at Rewalsar Lake are dedicated to sage Rishi Lomas, who is said to have revered Lord Shiva as a penance.

How to Reach Rawalsar Lake

The nearest airport is located at Bhuntar which is about 59 km from Mandi. Also people, who want to commute in train, can reach Pathankot station which is about 210 km. From Pathankot, trains are connected to Joginder Nagar, which is 55 km from Mandi. Mandi is well connected to all the major places. One can even hire a taxi to reach Rawalsar Lake.


During winters, the temperature tends to fall to 11°C and woollen clothing is required. Temperature during summers is hot and cotton clothes would be preferred.

Best Time to Visit

Rewalsar Lake can be visited any time during the year. However, the best time to visit this place would be from March to October.
