Importance of the Temple

The Jambudweep temple, located in Palitana in Gujarat is an important shrine for the Jains. This temple reflects the process of a man right from his birth till his death. The temple is mostly known for its cosmology exhibitions, which exposes certain strange facts and figures followed in the Jain system of calculation. These strange measures include those of weight, height, time, width and many more. The beauty of this exhibition is that it attracts both believers and non- believers of Jainism in huge numbers.

History and Overview of The Temple

The temple is set on top of the Sumeru Mountain, considered to be the most pious and tallest mountains of the world.  Devotees can get to the main shrine of the temple after climbing 136 steep steps.  It was during July 1974 that the foundation for this temple was laid. Devotees get to pray at the main temple or the Pandukshila only after offering prayers at all the small temples along the Sumeru Mountain. There are around 16 temples in the Sumeru Mountain. The Jambudweep temple is also visited by lots of devotees because of the extravagance of nature that can be found here. This temple is set against the excellent backdrop of the mountains, hills, valleys, rivers, gardens etc.

Concept of Jambudweep

The Jambudweep temple is designed in such a way that it depicts the universe. As the Sumeru Mountain forms the excellent backdrop of this temple, there are four zones that are visible here. Towards the east and west are the Videh Kshetras. Towards the south one can find the Bharat Kshetra, the scenic Himvan mountain range and various rivers. Towards the north one can find the majestic Airavat Kshetra. The temple has important metal trees in the north and south, namely Jambu Vriksha and Shalmali Vriksha respectively. There are lots of Jain scriptures like Triloskar, Tatvartha Sutra, Tilyopannati and many more which provide detailed explanations about the importance of these trees, the Sumeru Mountain, the significance of the Jambudweep temple etc.

Events at Jambudweep

Set up on a sprawling 35 acres that were provided by the Digambar Jain Trilok Shodh Sansthan, the Jambudweep temple is home to various religious, academic and literary events. This temple set at the beautiful backdrop of scenic beauty is visited by many local and international tourists.  The Lavan Samudra encircles the temple in a beautiful way. This offers a wonderful boating experience which is enjoyed by the hundreds of devotees who come here. Inside the Jambudweep temple premises, there are around 78 natural temples, 6 Samavsaran temples and 122 places that are dedicated to main deities. This temple is a visual delight for devotees during the evening hours, where it is illuminated with lights and water works. Some of the famous temples inside the Jambudweep premises are Kala Mandir, Shantinath Mandir, Teen Moorthi Mandir, Adinath Mandir, Navgrah Mandir, Sahastrakoot Jinalaya, Om Mandir, Meditation Temple and many more. The design of the temple is such that it provides lot of peace and scope of meditation for the tourists who come here. The spiritual experience that the devotees get here is simply out of the world.
