Sarita Udyan Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar is the  new capital city of Gujarat and lies on the west bank of the Sabarmati River. Gandhinagar is located approximately 25km North from Ahmadabad and the largest city of Gujarat, on the west central point of the Industrial corridor between Delhi and Mumbai.

The amazing location of Gandhinagar and numerous parks and gardens make it very beautiful to attracts tourists from India and abroad. Gandinagar is rightly referred as green city of Gujarat  because of its strategic location, planned structures and unique greenery all over the city. Sarita Udyan is the most famous garden of this city. The garden is centrally located in sector-9. The atmosphere and ornamental flowers, trees with other entertainment sites are sure to attract all visitors coming here to enjoy the bounty of nature.

Brief History

Two separate states, Maharashtra and Gujarat, were carved out of Bombay state in 1960. Immediately, Ahmadabad became Gujarat’s capital and a new capital was to be built on a new land, once part of Pethapur state ruled by King Pethasinh in the 13th century.

For the purpose of setting new capital, the then Government selected Mr. H.K. Mewada, who had worked as a trainees under legendary architect Le Corbusier in Chandigarh Project in the 1950s,as Chief Architect.

The city was developed in four divergent phases:

  • From 1970 to 1980, the city was known as Gandhian city based on Gandhji’s principles and concepts, for infrastructure completion.
  • City was tagged as unpolluted city during 1980 and 1990, an overall period of low pollution in India.
  • Many trees, plants and greeneries planting projects were under taken from 1990 and thus the city became the ‘Green City ‘.
  • In this phase, which is continuing, the city should be cosmopolitan, green and utilize solar energy in general.

The city has been divided in Sectors and each of these sectors will accommodate about 7500persons as residential community with all necessary facilities viz. schools, shopping, playgrounds, parks, etc. These sectors are situated on rectangular pattern and measuring one km by four km with an approximate area of 190acres.

Beauty

The beautiful Sarita Udyan in Gandhinagar is located on the bank of river Sabarmati. The atmosphere of the garden trees and flower plants are is a positive attraction for all the visitors.

There is Botanical garden also within the Udyan, Sarita Udyan attracts all from children to aged populace, families, couples to fulfill their entertaining, learning and picnic needs. A deer park is situated nearby and enhances the charm of this garden.

Other attractions of Gandhinagar for a must visit:

  • Adalaj Stepwell:

Queen Rudabai built this well in 1499AD. This step well is several stories deep and depicts leaves, flowers, birds, fish and other ornamental designs on its walls and pillars. It is situated about 18km south of Gandhinagar.

  • GIFT City Tower:

The tallest Tower building of Gujarat and was completed in record time of 14months. It is going to be a global hub of financial services as per Gujarat Govt. planning’s.

  • Akshardham Temple:

This is a beautiful Mandir surrounded by fountains and gardens. It is built of pink sand stones with religious carvings.

  • Deer Park / Indroda Park:

This park is also known as GEER Foundation Park and spread in large area. It is a must see park due to its Jurassic Park theme, Aquarium, Snake park, Bird Park and Deer Park etc. in various sections.

  • Mahatma Mandir:

It is not a Mandir but an exhibitor area of the economic and industrial development of the state. It is located in sector-13.

  • Capital Complex -Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan, a magnificent domed building.

How to Reach

By Road

GSRTC buses provide services to transport anywhere in the state & nearest states. Gandhinagar is connected to Surat, Mumbai & Navi Mumbai through NH-8A and Connected to Ahmedabad through NH-8C. BRTS is being planned to connect Gandhinagar and Ahmadabad.

By Air

The nearest airport Sardar Patel International Airport provides Domestic and International flights from Ahmadabad to across the world.

By Rail

Railway station exists in Gandhinagar and Recently Developed. The Indian Railways transports are Available for Moving in Northern India & Eastern India From Kalol Railway Station. Ahmadabad is the nearest rail junction which provides connectivity with major cities and towns of India. Metro Rail project is also underway between Gandhinagar and Ahmadabad.

By Local

To move about locally in Sectors, CNG Auto-Rickshaws are available. City bus service is also available.

Best Time to Visit

The temperature ranges during the summer months between 36degree and 42degree Celsius. In the months between November and February, the temperature remains in between 19degree Celsius and 27degree Celsius. The time from middle of June to middle of September is wet and humid weather due to the southwest monsoon. Thus the best time to visit is from October to March.

Timing

Time to visit the park is from early Morning to early late evening.
