Yamuna Sports Complex located in New Delhi is a sports arena which hosts wrestling, boxing, and rugby and table tennis tournaments. Yamuna Sports Complex is owned and operated by Delhi Development Authority. Lawn Bowls and Archery competitions were performed during the Commonwealth Games of 2010 here. The stadium offers coaching facilities for sports enthusiasts on various games. Archery field is known to be the best in India.

Location

The location of the sports complex is Road Number 71 A, Surajmal Vihar, New Delhi, Delhi 110092. Yamuna sports complex is located near luxurious locality of Shahdara and Yojana Vihar. The sports complex is accessible from Monday to Saturday from 10:30am to 3:00pm. Metro services can be availed from Karkardooma Metro station to Delhi Development Authority (DDA) or Anand Vihar Metro station to DDA Vacant plot to reach the Yamuna Sports Complex. Visitors can park their vehicles towards the North West parking slot and walk 100 metres towards the gate.

Construction

Ex-Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi laid the foundation stone of the Yamuna Sports Complex in the year 1989. From the year 1994 the sports complex was opened partially to people on pay and play basis, and later was officially inaugurated on 20th July 1999. A large stone sculpture was mounted at the complex in the year January 2002. The sculpture was “aiming for excellence” created by Amarnath Sehgal, a renowned sculptor.

Eco – Friendly Features

Yamuna Sports Complex has initiated various nature friendly projects, like solar cells, rain water harvesting and CFL light system. Solar tubes are used for in-house lighting of galleries, effluent treatment plant, and water conservation through dual knob flushing system. Also the recycled water is used for horticulture. Heat insulation methods are used through double insulated glazing glass and thermal insulated roofs and walls.

Uses

The Yamuna Sports Complex provides various sports facilities to people. Some of them are synthetic tennis court, practise wall for tennis, gymnasium for ladies and a fitness centre, badminton court, play area for chess, carrom, pool table, billiards, snooker. There is a separate area for volley ball, basket ball, aerobics, skating, a jogging track and artificial climbing wall. A separate ground for playing cricket is also available. There is coaching facility available for members and non-members on sports like tennis, hockey and basket ball, swimming and aerobics. Professional cricket coaching is available within the sports complex.  The sports complex has a huge swimming pool used for Olympic tournaments, and it also has an in-house snack bar. Membership is available for people by paying nominal charges, 50% discount on membership charges is given to government servants. The sports complex offers discounts to senior citizens on membership charges.
