History of Karol Bagh

Around 1920s, some of the areas of Delhi were evacuated for building Connaught Place and nearby areas. The areas which were evacuated include Raja Ka Bazaar, Jaisingh Pura and Madhoganj. The residents from these places relocated to a rocky area having dense bushes and trees in the western side of Delhi. Today, we know this place as Karol Bagh.

This area was primarily filled with large population of Muslims, but as the partition of India took place, many Muslims went to Pakistan while the area received an influx of Hindi refugees from West Punjab that became a part of Pakistan after partition. Many of these refugees were traders. These traders started their shops to earn their livelihood after coming to India. Today, these shops have spanned over the counter and Karol Bagh has been transformed as one of the biggest business centres of Delhi where you can purchase a wide array of products ranging from clothes to electronics, books to jewellery and branded stuff to wholesale clothes.
