Buddha Jayanti Park

Buddha Jayanti Park in New Delhi is a well-manicured and beautiful garden with lovely flowers and sprawling lawns. It is located south of the Delhi Ridge and is also known as The Buddha Jayanti Smarak Park. It is a major tourist spot in the city and equally popular with the locals. Created to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment, it remains a beautiful oasis in the heart of a busy city.

This park has a 2.5-metre high statue of a seated Lord Buddha, which is considered a symbol of gratitude from the people of Tibet. The statue is placed in the middle of an island on a waterway system. Locals come to the park to celebrate Buddha Jayanti festival on the Vesak Full Moon Day. May is usually the time for this festival.

An artificially-built landscape, it has a delightful appeal. The statue of Lord Buddha is surrounded by a circular stone fence with a circumambulatory path. This path is known as “Parikrama” and considered to be holy for believers. There are colored stone rings in this low embankment and each colour represents life elements that have been explained in the Kalachakra Mandala.

The colour yellow means earth, red fire, black symbolizes air, white stands for water and green implies space. This beautiful park attracts people from across the world and is a favorite spot for jogging and morning walking for locals.

History of the Buddha Jayanti Park, New Delhi

The Buddha Jayanti Park is special because a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree under which the Lord Buddha attained enlightenment is located here. This sapling was planted by the late Prime Minister of India, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on 24th October, 1964.

Emperor Ashoka’s daughter Sanghamitra had also taken a sapling from the original Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment and went to Sri Lanka to preach Buddhism. Little wonder then, believers of Buddhism bestow tremendous faith in this park.

Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti is celebrated here every year with much pomp and show. In 1993, this Park was dedicated to the 14th Dalai Lama and is one of the best Parks with natural scenic beauty in Delhi today.
