Ajmal Khan Park

The Ajmal Khan Park is situated in Karol Bagh area of New Delhi. Spread over 5 acres, this park offers lush greenery and a tranquil environment for those who seek to spend some quiet time in the lap of nature. Lined with beautiful flowering trees and blooming flower beds in myriad shades, this is a haven of peace and serenity. The park is used as a venue for several social functions and political rallies. The citizens of New Delhi also use it for organising weddings and family events. On warm evenings, youngsters can be seen playing cricket or football on the green grounds of the Ajmal Khan Park.

This park also serves as a popular jogger’s park for people residing around it. People can be seen walking or jogging in the park in the mornings and evenings. The main attraction of Ajmal Khan Park is a musical fountain, which has been installed by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation. Beside this musical fountain, a statue of noted freedom fighter Ajmal Khan has been installed. This park has the capacity of holding at least 20,000 persons at a time.

History of Ajmal Khan Park

Ajmal Khan Park was established in 1921 and is named after the freedom fighter Hakim Ajmal Khan. He was a physician, who is credited with the revival of Unani medicine in the country in the 20th century. In order to do so, he founded the Tibbia College in Delhi, which specialises in knowledge of Unani medicines and treatments. Ajmal Khan was also one of the founding members of the reputed Jamia Millia University, which is one of the best educational institutes in India for higher education. He became the first Chancellor of the University in 1920 and remained in office till his death in 1927.

A close aide of Mahatma Gandhi, Ajmal Khan participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement (Satyagraha) as well. He was the frontrunner of the Khilafat movement. Later in 1921, he became the first Muslim president of the Indian National Congress during a meeting held in Gujarat. He was also conferred the title of Haziqul Mulk by the Government of India in 1907 in honour of his services to the nation.

Karol Bagh, where the park is located, is best known for Ghaffar market. This is the place for thrift shops if you are looking for cheap and affordable goodies. Another important shopping street in the area is the Ajmal Khan Road. There are several retail shops of international brands here as well.

How to Reach

Ajmal Khan Park is open to visitors on all days of the week. Local transportation by buses, autorickshaws and taxis are readily available to the park. The easiest, convenient and most affordable option is via the Delhi Metro. The closest metro station to Ajmal Khan Park is Karol Bagh metro station.
