Diwan I Khas

Diwan-i-khas or Hall of Private Audience is inside the Red Fort. This is where the Mughal Emperor held meetings with state guests and courtiers. The place was also called Shah Mahal.

Architecture

Diwan-i-khas is made of red sandstone. It displays excellent ancient Mughal culture. It is a richly decorated place, one of its kinds among all Red Fort structures. It is adorned in Mughal taste, which displays a careful balance of extravagance, sophistication, and detailed finish.

The hall is a rectangular chamber featuring high arched openings that are engraved in a splendid manner. The arches are supported by piers decorated with floral designs.

The center of Diwan-i-khas features the Peacock Throne. Shah Jahan is said to sit and conduct meetings on this. According to reports, the throne was stolen by Nadir Shah in 1739.

Nahr-i-Bihisht or Stream of Paradise would flow across the center of Diwan-i-Khas. Arches at hall corners displayed inscriptions from the lines composed by the renowned Poet Amir Khusro. The lines read: “If there be a paradise on earth, it is this, it is this, it is this.”

Ceiling of the hall was inlaid with gold and silver.

During the India Rebellion of 1857 the interior of Diwan-i-Khas was completely evaded. Thrones, carpets, and other items of beauty were stolen. Today, the hall is just a plain hall.
